Catalinbread SFT Overdrive
Originally starting as a Bass Overdrive concept, Catalinbread expanded the scope of the SFT to get some of the best sounding Bass and Guitar Overdrive sounds out there.
Catalinbread started this pedal by taking a stab at the late 60's and early 70's era amp tones and making them work with the more modern drop tuned heavy stuff, then added the ability to control the amount of grind solely based on attack, plus bone-crushing grind that holds together without sounding thin.
They threw all this in a pedal and then started listening. They listened to the dynamics, working on the input until they had a lively, responsive "tubey" sounding amp in a stompbox.
Catalinbread then took it one step further by listening to the EQ to make sure it had that classic midrange sound. They added a pair of versatile treble and bass controls for dialing in the perfect feel and only then started in on the drive characteristics.
Catalinbread wanted the SFT to be clean and really full sounding when you picked lightly, but blossom into that huge rich grind when you hit it harder. It had to decay in a certain way, no fizzy stuff as the notes, or chords die off. It needed to respond in a very dynamic way just like old vintage amps do – no generic smothering of the transients, it needed to "breathe".
Only after months of listening and testing did they come up with the SFT - A super-versatile bass pedal, plus a guitar pedal that is a faithful recreation of those classic vintage amp tones with the ability to morph into more modern heavy sounds.
